surviving your first year of university

Adjusting to life on campus can be tough. For the first time ever, you're living on your own and while that spells FREEDOM, it also means caring for and picking up after yourself.

Plus, between classes, assignments and keeping up a social life - the struggle is unbelievably real. So here are some tips on how you can make this transitioning period a little smoother for you.

COME PREPARED

Make a list of all the things you need to make your life easier. Just to give you an idea, here are some of the things we would pack - alarm clock, planner, printer, electric kettle, slow cooker, headphones, handheld steam iron, food containers etc. Then comes the fun part –shopping!

POSITIVE VIBES ONLY

A new school filled with new people, in a totally different environment can be overwhelming for anyone. Sometimes the only way to deal with a big change is to power through it positively. You attract what you are, so keep your chin up and concentrate on your long-term goals.

FIND YOUR CROWD

University is a time of self-discovery, don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Try to bond with the other students - say yes to invitations to hang out, join clubs and activities outside the classroom, it's the best way to meet and interact with other people around you.

LIVE WELL

Without mum's home cooked meals and constant nagging, it's easy to fall into an unhealthy lifestyle. While it's tempting to stay up all night and snack all day, you should always aim to get a full night's rest, eat healthier meals and exercise regularly for your physical health and mental wellbeing.

SPEND YOUR TIME WISELY

With only 24 hours a day, every waking moment counts. Budget your hours wisely for classes, studying, assignments, extra-curricular activities, and even just for spending time with friends. The key is having a balance.

DEALING WITH HOMESICKNESS

We all get a little homesick sometimes. The best way to deal with it is to simply embrace it. When you're feeling a little blue and missing home, just pick up the phone and call someone. You’ll usually come out feeling a little better.

EYES ON THE PRIZE

Lastly, with all that newfound freedom and independence, it's easy to get sidetracked. Don't forget the real reason why you’re there. Make friends, have fun, but always keep in mind that studies come first.

Your first year of university is truly an exciting time in your life - there's the thrill of making new friends, moving into a new home, exploring a new city and gaining all these new experiences!

To help you make the most of your university life, remember to keep your eyes peeled for our Global Outreach Programme and Student Mobility Programme. These amazing initiatives by YTN might just be your chance to experience living and studying abroad at an institution of your choice!
