When you live a life of seclusion, it's often difficult to imagine a life beyond your own, much less the opportunities that lay ahead. This is why it's not uncommon to see children and youth from deep rural communities forgo a higher education in favor of working, and it was high time this changed.
Program Mutiara Timur (PMT), specially created through the joint efforts of the Yayasan Tenaga Nasional – YTN and TNB, was designed to do just that by providing exposure to less fortunate students and inspiring them to not only continue pursuing, but also excelling in their education.
Aimed at students from Sabah and Sarawak, Program Mutiara Timur evaluates participants based on their PT3 results, leadership, potential to excel and how active they were in extra-curricular activities. This five-day programme is an opportunity for students to participate in group exercises, motivational talks and prepare them for their upcoming SPM examinations. The two-part programme also includes study tours to educational spots around town.
Through these visitations and initiatives, YTN and TNB are hoping to trigger an aspiration to excel among the less fortunate youth of Malaysia.
